JC-69654P SUBEDAR MODAN SINGH, SIKH REGT HOCKEY STAR IS NO MORE (23 JAN).
1. On 13 May 1942, Modan was born in village Atawla in Jalandar. He was lovingly called Modi and spent his childhood at his maternal grandfather Jagat Singh's home in Sansarpur village, the hockey nursery. Here he imbibed the love and nuances of hockey which made him famous. Col Balbir Singh (ASC) Olympian and Modan are cousins. Stockily built, with strong shoulders and powerful legs he had deep piercing eyes and an intimidating presence. The hockey coaches cashed on his physique and slotted him as a full back.  His robust tackling and intimidating looks made him a defender whom forwards avoided entangling. His surma (khol)  lined eyes were hawk like and scanned his half of the hockey field deligently. Adding to his aura were  his perfectly twirled  mustaches. He specialised as left full back with hard hitting penalty corner strikes.
2. Gen Harbakhsh Singh Vrc,  Col of The Sikh Regt, a keen hockey player himself, was pushing to strengthen the Regimental hockey team. A recruiting team under Capt ( Brig) Shamsher Singh was sent from Meerut to Punjab to recruit hockey players. From Sansarpur Modan Singh was one of the four he recruited in May 1960. Modan was empanelled to 4 Sikh. So began Modi's hockey career. He was a panther in defence patrolling his area, tackling and intimidating opponent forwards, soon his reputation exploded as a defender forwards needed to avoid. But for his robust and at times physical tackling he would have represented India. He played for the services for many years between 1964-73.
3. In the 1965  Nehru Gold Cup, Delhi, Modan scored the winning goal whereby the Sikh Regt team won the prestigious cup. Yet again in 1973, Modan Singh captained the team when it was runners up in the Nehru Cup. Modi carried a heavy hockey stick well near if not above the prescribed 22 ounces. When he struck the ball it travelled with immense velocity. I once picked up his stick during practise and asked him, " Saab ehnu chak kay kida bhajday ho" ( how do you run with this weight) he replied candidly, " Bhajday tan forward nay main tan rokda hain'. ( The forwards do the running i only stop them). But he possessed a kind heart and helped those in need, a contrast to his on-field persona.
3. Many generations of Regimental Officers have played along side Modan Saab, Lt Col Haripal Kaushik, Lt Gen MS Bhullar, Maj Gen Tarlochan Singh, Brig HJS Chimi, Col RS Cheema and self to name a few. For some reason Sub Modan Singh was posted to 21 Sikh ( to promote him is my guess) from where he retired on 31 May 1988, settling in his native Atawla.
Some months back while on a visit to Jalandhar, Modan Saab came calling and we had a long reminiscent afternoon over tea.
The end came peacefully on 23 Jan 23 at 6 AM.  Modan Saab will be remembered for many generations as a stoic defender and a golden heart . May you rest peacefully in your heavenly abode.

72nd REPUBLIC DAY

 26 JANUARY 2021

The Sikh Regimental Centre celebrated 72nd Republic Day on 26 Jan 2021 by paying homage to the Martyrs of the Regiment at war memorial of The Sikh Regiment.

Later on, following the unique tradition of the Indian Army, JCOs of the centre were invited by the officers to a cocktail party held in the Officers’ Mess. In a family-like atmosphere they had personal conversation and exchanged views on various issues.

The custom of hosting party by the officers for the JCOs traces back to the time of independence in 1947 when India become independent, British Officers were till part of teh Indian Army. It would have been little airward for the Indian officers to  celebrate the same in their presence.  Therefore they were invited to the JCO mess for the same. After that this became a tradition and after we became Republic then the officers decided to reciprocate this fine gesture by inviting JCOs to the officers mess On 26 Jan 1950, which also became a tradition. Thereafter, these two goodwill functions are held in all the units & regiments of the Indian Army every year.

There is no doubt this is a great tradition to be proud of. A healthy atmosphere prevails and the guests & the hosts freely interact while sipping drinks and munching snacks. They share their views and opinion in an informal manner.

All officers & JCOs thus not only enjoy the festivity of great events but also remind each other to preserve the sanctity of these occasions. So that the coming generation continue to enjoy each year such historical days.

The Famous Battle of Saragarhi was fought in Sep 1897 by 22 soldiers of 4 SIKH (XXXVI SIKH), forming part of the then British Indian Army. The battle was fought against thousands of Pathans in the North Western Frontier Province. All 22 soldiers martyred in the battle as they fought to the last bullet and the last breath but did not yield even an inch of ground that they were holding. In a rarest of the rare historical occurrence, all the combatants were awarded the “Indian Order of Merit” the highest gallantry award prevalent those  days.

1.   UHQ Rect Rally was held at SRC wef 16-17 Mar 20 which included rect of indls under Sports Quota also. During screening of the sportsmen fwg issues were noticed :-

   (a)   Majority of the
   candidates sponsored by
   the bns were either
   not in possession
   of eligible certificates, or
   found lacking in desired
   sporting skills.

   (b)   Most of the
   candidates were not
   in possession of Sponser
   Certificates. Also, number
   of Sponser DOs were recd
   post termination of the
   rally.

   (c)    Some of the
   candidates were NOT
   meeting the class
   composn criteria of Sikh
   troops, hence were
   rejected.

2.   Selection of sportsmen under UHQ rect rally is an excellent opportunity to select outstanding sportsmen for the Regt who have the potential to bring glory to the Regt & the Nation. To further streamline the rect process of sportsmen, all bns are requested to follow the fwg guidelines:-

   (a)   Bns should identify

   UHQ Rect Rally, which
takes place twice a yr at
   SRC.

   the docus of candidates &
   sponser only those
   candidates who are in
   possession of eligible
   certificates as
   promulgated by SRC.

   (d)   Besides vetting the
   certificates , indls should
   also be tested for their
   sporting skills as
   possibility of candidates in
   possession of fraud
   certificates can't be
   negated.

   (e)   Bns must
   authentincate the
   certificates of the
   candidates being
   sponsored & ink signed
   copy of certificate of each
   candidate (with photo)
   should be att alongwith
   Sponser DO.

   (f)     Bns should handover
   a copy of sponser cert,
duly signed by CO, to the
   candidates , which should
   be produced during sports
   screening at SRC.

   (g)   A copy of DO letter
   with sponser cert, duly
   verified by CO (ink signed)
   should reach SRC atleast a
   week prior to the conduct
   of rally. Any DO recd
   during/post conduct of
   rally will be assumed
   invalid.

3.    Furthermore, SRC will promulgate the fwg docus (related to screening of sportsmen) to the bns prior to conduct of next UHQ Rect Rally :-

    (a)   Sample of certificates
    recognised by respective
    National/State Auth for
    each sport.

    (b)   Sample of Sponsor
    Certificate.

    (c)    Desired std for each
    sports especially,
    Athletics .

4.      Adherance to above mentioned guidelines will assist us in selecting outstanding sportsmen for the regt. You all are welcome to put across any suggestion on the subject. Together we all are committed to drive the regt on the path of excellence & glory.

Thank you
Brig Sri Kumar
